HOW A REGULAR COURSE WORKS

Our Pedagogy:
We teach these arts in a simple and direct manner; in an “old style”, so to speak.
The Teachers of Boabom perfect their movements, among other things, learning to transmit them in an easily understandable manner aimed at the student’s enjoyment and comprehension.
The number of the students depends on their location. Because the classes are progressive, the students belong to a single course, with which they advance from one stage to the next.

Stages:
The actual system of teaching of the Boabom School develops a standard program:
Seamm-Jasani = 7 stages and finish with stage 8.
Osseous Boabom = 9 stages and finish with stage 10 (graduation).
All the student start learning Seamm-Jasani or Osseous Boabom. Eventually the students can learn Yaanbao (Art of Implements), Meditation and the Pedagogy. Each of these Arts has different levels too.

Time and Fee:
A standard course usually meets for one hour, one or two times per week. For example, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:00. Each class means advancing with new movements, it is not a repetitive class.
If the student has a very busy schedule, she or he can take a course that lasts longer and meets only once a week, such as Saturdays from 10:30 to 12:30.
The Seminars can be developed in a weekend.
The schedules and fee system are regulated by each School or Certified Teacher, completely independent from the Council.

Location of Classes:
In general, all that you need to take classes is a clean, open space. You do not need weights or machines: just a simple place without interruptions. Ideally there should be a carpet, but a wood floor or other comfortable surface is fine.
Alternately, classes can be held outdoors, in places that are tranquil and quiet.
The older Boabom Schools often have some elements or diagrams (dkyil ‘khor/དཀྱིལ་འཁོར།[tib.]) to help meditation (relaxation) and to focus students on developing their technique.

The Student:
Anyone can take classes, from seven years old up to any age. There is no differentiation between women and men, children and adults, etc., although for elderly or disabled persons there is a separate pedagogy that should be followed in its own class. However, these specific classes will be greatly beneficial to those with movement or other physical problems.
If you like, you can read the opinions of professionals who have taken these courses and have observed their results.
All that a beginner needs in order to participate are comfortable clothes, and… a huge desire to learn!!

“Throughout the ages, discount the relationship between the physical and the mental has been a matter of debate. In the Boabom philosophy, such a relationship is prominently present. However, even if this assumed relationship would not exist at all, Boabom leads to various absolute physical improvements.

First of all, it appeals not only to sport fanatics, but also reaches out to a group that is notorious for being both not prone to work out and also would greatly benefit from it. This because the physical challenge is adapted to one’s capabilities instead of demanding it the other way around. This group consist of (but is not limited to elderly, overweight people and people in poor physical health.

Second, a lot of exercises in Boabom improve your balance. You might not have noticed before, but keeping your balance requires a tremendous effort of a lot of muscles, of which many are very small. These muscles tend to be left out in most sports that mainly focus on larger muscle groups. Unlike joints, muscles can be trained and actually get a lot stronger. The same muscles that are needed to keep your balance can alleviate the forces applied to your joints, such as the knees and the spine. This way, damaged or worn joints can be relieved. Notorious pain in the lower back and knees have been found to greatly benefit from such increases in these smaller muscles. Even in the very exact and scientific medical field it is generally agreed upon that lower back pain and stress are strongly correlated. As Boabom tends to reduce stress as well, the effects on lower back pain would be twofold.

Finally, Boabom gives you a cardiac and pulmonary workout. Depending on your physical condition at the beginning and the stage you’re attending, you’re training a different part of your cardiovascular system. In general, it is a long-interval based workout. By doing such a workout at least once a week for a longer period of time, muscle strength and the cardiovascular system improve, thus increasing general physical health. This reduces the risk of, diabetes, heart disease, immobility and death.

In short, exercise in general is beneficial to your health. Unlike many other sports, Boabom also appeals to the elderly, a group not prone to exercise. By improving your balance, forces applied to joints are ameliorated, thus relieving strain and wear on them. It can thus greatly reduce long-term lower back- and joint pain. Also improved balance reduces risk of falling, which is a great source of mortality and morbidity in the elderly.

It keeps you in shape, so you will perform better in daily life. And of course one could argue it is also fun!”

“The “ART OF ACTIVE RELAXATION” is a dynamic technique that joins soft and fluid exercises with breathing techniques (also called balance breathing or, Pranayama). These techniques work from the deepest levels of our consciousness as we use movements and breathing to achieve a balance between our body and mind, and throughout our entire organism.

Its benefits are many, felt from the very first classes and in basic aspects of the student’s personality: body, mind, emotion, volition:

a) By working with all the muscles of the body (including those that we barely use in everyday life) in a rhythmic and fluid way, this Art produces, on a physical level:

  • relaxation of muscular tension
  • rediscovery of the body’s inherently fluid and harmonious movement
  • gives strength and balance to the body’s overall bearing
  • facilitates the body’s expression

b) On the levels of emotion and volition, this Art helps to:

  • unblock hidden and suppressed emotions
  • increase one’s self-esteem
  • develop trust in oneself
  • increase decisiveness
  • directs and disciplines the will
  • increases one’s level of satisfaction with oneself
  • improves perception

c) On the general mental level, this Art brings:

  • increased concentration and attention span
  • strengthening of long-term memory
  • an increase in clarity of ideas, goals, and objectives
  • a facility for problem solving, inclining one to alternative solutions
  • an increased creativity
  • better intellectual productivity
  • a diminution of stress
  • an increased facility for learning

Across all professions, one observes a general increase in the productivity of the individual, in his or her general state of well-being, balance, and overall energy. One also notices an increased capacity for abstract reasoning when faced with real situations, facilitating work without stress, and with greater efficacy and efficiency.

All of these effects I noticed within myself, as a result of studying and practicing this Art, in all of my professional duties: as a Clinical and Private Practice Psychologist, Professor of Psychology, Lawyer, and Student.”

PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF THE ART OF RELAXATION AND SELF-MEDICINE
F. Cerna (Chile)
Physical Education, Sports & Recreation,
Rugby National Champion, Rowing National Champion.

“This Art, as a discipline and from an athletic point of view, fulfills all of the standards, requirements, and objectives sought by Physical Education; that is to say that it is a practice that fully develops a person, both physically and mentally.

It can be practiced by anyone, without restictions of age or gender, and can be used as rehabilitation and physical therapy. It develops motor skills that spread from our neurosensory perception to a wider spatial/temporal field through simple and complicated coordinative movements. It also improves our athleticism, along with strengthening our volition and mental prowess, leading us to a state of general health as it promotes and optimizes the general functioning of our organism, improving our respiratory, nervous, circulatory, and muscular systems. Mainly based in isotonic and isometric movements accompanied by opened and corrected breathing, it is a very effective discipline for enlarging our aerobic capacity while simultaneously enhancing us anaerobically.

Through constant and systematic training the student gains better muscle tone, corrects his or her posture, and comes to a balanced body weight. On the functional side of things I have to say that physical abilities are also enhanced, improving strength, agility, speed, resistance, power, flexibility, and general ease of movement.

The movements executed by the students are completely natural and do not require any additional load as the only resistance is given by their own body as they move it in every direction, allowing for a physical development that is strictly individual, tailored to the needs of each student.”

“I have practiced Boabom for over two years now and it has become an important part of my life, salve for the exercise and discipline but also for the great feeling of community at the school. The feeling of accomplishment when I find myself learning every time I practice is priceless. I highly recommend it!”
Raul C., approved USA

“When I started to study this Art over nine months ago, more about I was not sure that I would or could continue. I was barely able to complete the simplest movements. My goals at that time were increased flexibility, improved coordination and concentration, as well as relief from pain. I was in near constant pain from my feet. These classes have had a dramatic influence upon me. I have achieved all of my goals and then some!…

  • I have gone from needing 12 to 16 ibuprofen per day to needing only 3 to 6 to relieve the pain in my feet…
  • My golf game has improved considerably as a result of my improved flexibility and concentration…
  • My outlook on life has transformed from looking for the negative to looking for the positive in all situations…
  • When I think back to my first few lessons I am amazed at my progress; going from being unable to maintain my balance during most movements to completing and mastering a whole cycle of them…

I have recommended these classes to friends and coworkers and would encourage anyone to practice this Art.”
Richard K., Newton / software developer and consultant.

“Thank you for a wonderful class. You are superb teachers, transforming the struggle of physical learning into a experience of joy.”
Larry W., Newton / MD pediatric hematology – oncology

“I enjoy Seamm Jasani very much and my teacher is great and fun. I have always enjoyed high energy and creativity in this class. It helped me to achieve body equilibrium and restoration. My teacher’s explanations are always clear and the atmosphere at the lessons is very enjoyable. The most important part of this program for me is to pay attention to posture. I learned how to achieve effortless balance without strain. I have problems with my cervical muscles and disks and Seamm Jasani is the only training I feel no pain after the lessons. I think the secret is in its unique breathing pattern. Seamm Jasani is an ancient Art that anyone can follow.”
Lucy K., Boston / piano teacher

“I have been practicing Boabom for about 8 months. Within that time, I have been happy to witness a distinct physical transformation as well as an increased ability to focus. At first, the movements and the overall classes seemed fairly simple and not too rigorous. As my studies in the Art have progressed, the classes and movements have gradually become more complex and demanding, both physically and mentally, although never beyond my ability. The many movements I have learned work the entire body and have created equilibrium between all the muscle groups in my body which have helped me maintain better posture and have also helped to relieve me of occasional tendonitis flair ups. The concentration that is required to learn new movements has also helped me to increase my ability to focus.
I enjoy the seemingly endless sequence in which new movements are introduced, which keeps the class interesting and keeps the student wondering what will be learned in the next class. I am always looking forward to the next class and eager to teach my body to do new things. The classes have been taught in a very positive way and our teacher has always been very supportive, patient, and clear in the explanation of new movements.
I look forward to the knowledge that will be passed to me in the next stage and witnessing the physical, spiritual, and mental growth that will result in the acquisition of that knowledge. Although Boabom is an ancient Art, I feel that, in these days of cubicles, computers, and automobiles, is needed more than ever for its wellspring of personal health and wellness.”
Steve F., Roslindale / musician and teacher

“I feel more positive in my approach to my everyday life now… more awake, more clear-headed. Physically, I feel better than I have in a long time. I feel strong, flexible and more relaxed. I feel happier… healthier (they do go hand in hand). Physical problems that were nagging before have diminished noticeable or disappeared. My focus and confidence in general are greatly improved and I feel I am becoming more in tune with what I need in my life internally and externally and what I do not. Soon after I began the class, I felt a positive effect quickly. Since, this effect has continued to grow in surprising ways. It began with self-defense and became so much more. I feel a great deal of gratitude for everything Boabom has helped to awaken within me.”
Jen W., Jamaica Plain / technical writer

“Why don’t you join our class? You’ll get a good workout and it will help you relax. You’ll forget about everything else during class, so busy we’ll be keeping your mind!” Yeah right! This guy is just trying to sell me something. But I liked the movements so I decided to give it a try anyway. If nothing else, it could be fun. To my amazement, after a few weeks I actually got a workout off of it, and a tough one at that! And all that talk about relaxation by keeping the mind busy with the class, being a skeptic I shamefully had to admit it did just that, no matter how often I decided while going to a class that I was so busy and stressed out this time it wouldn’t work. Who would have thought, Boabom rocks!”
Paul J., Brighton / MD student

“Since the first day I have been learning a lot of new, exciting movements and techniques on the Art of Boabom. The classes have been challenging and engaging with thorough, detailed instructions, and our teacher is dedicated and helpful. The classes are serious yet unthreatening, so it has been a good learning environment for me. I hope to continue learning and gaining more physical and mental strength from the Art of Boabom. Although the classes are getting more difficult, I am excited to learn all the new movements and steps as I grow as a student.”
Toshiko F., Roslindale / teacher

“The best part of taking classes, aside from physically feeling great, is being with the people. The Art attracts a wonderful community. The teachers cultivate a positive and light energy that spills into their students. Whatever was going on for me during the day gets cleared up when I go to a class. I look forward to many more years of self-discovery and change.”
Sara B., Cambridge / yoga instructor and grad student

“…I have only the highest praise for the Boston School of Boabom, its instructors and students. Also, I would like to thank Asanaro and the Ancient Ones who have preserved this Art…”
Dennis C., Boston / visual artist, MFA

“I attend Boabom class to get a bit of exercise, to gain strength mentally, physically and spiritually, because if I believe in myself I can conquer obstacles and climb mountains of great heights.”
Alexandra P., Arlington / corporate travel coordinator

“Strength in Motion: that is my favorite visual image of Boabom. Thank you all for a very warm, welcoming teaching experience.”
Fred L., Boston / architect, PhD

“As I enter the tranquil setting of my class, the door to Seamm Jasani quietly opens and the Art invites my distracted mind and hurried body to cross the threshold of its oasis. We greet each other with respect and begin to breathe. And as the deep and cleansing breathing fills my body, my mind is awakened and ready to enter into this sacred and nurturing dance. Its fluid rhythm is measured by our mindful breathing that harmonizes and vibrates as this stillness in motion. An hour passes in a moment and I am relaxed, energized and restored – a transformation that brings equilibrium to my mind and body that now take leave in strength, wholeness and joy. The next invitation to partake of the Art cannot come too soon…”

“Basically, this Art is not exercise for the lazy – but it has a magical effect on someone like me, who never sticks with any exercise program: it gives me an active connection between my mind and body, constant improvement, and a program I stick because it’s always new. While at first I was confused by its combination of (literally) jumpy activity and funny little exercises like eye motions, I soon learned that’s how it kept my attention.
It’s exercise that doesn’t require you to have bulging muscles, feet that can go behind your head, or six-pack abs. Nor does it ask you to behave like a monk or an athlete. Like any program it requires commitment, but gives you plenty of incentives to keep coming (constant progress; just enough formality to give it a “group effort” feel). It requires attention to really get anything out of it, but it rewards that attention with challenges you can meet.”
Michael B., Boston / musician and teacher

Gracias.”
